Frustration = H2O?

I am becoming increasingly frustrated with Katie's constant scratching on my couch and recliner chair. Sometimes I will remove her from the couch 3 or 4 times in a row. Each time I remove her I give her a stern "no" and put her off the couch. 2 seconds later she is back scratching again and again and again. My roomate is amazed at her inability to learn. I've researched online as to how to train her to use the scratching post (play around the post, etc) but it doesn't work. Someone else told me that using a squirt gun as negative reinforcement works. Guess I'll try that. : (

Frustration

I can't for the life of me get Katie to stop scratching my furniture. I have one scratching post that Tech uses on a regular basis. Figuring she needed her own, I bought another post made with material that is as close to my couch as I could find. No good. I tried playing with her around the post to try to get her used to it. She's made a couple of attempts to scratch it, but usually just walks away from it.

Declawing is not an option. Anyone have any suggestions?

Katie's new favorite pastime.... I throw a ping pong ball up the stairs. She runs up and chases it back down. Hours of fun for her (and for me as it uses up a lot of that kitten energy she seems to have so much of).
